First impressions

We made it! After a very long trip (plus a 2 hour delay on the airplane in washington) we arrived exhausted but smiling in Chennai, and were greeted by our fantastic sponsor family. The kids were great on the flight. Slept a few hours on each leg, and enjoyed watching movies throughout the flight. (Luftansa is a million times better than United, and we felt upgraded just going from one shoddy american airplane with tiny screens and one option for kids movies, to the european airline with 5 more inches of space and at least 10 different movie options, plus toys and smiling faces!)

We were up half the night of Thursday when we arrived, and all slept until mid afternoon. It was wonderful and restful, and we headed up to our upstairs neighbors' house (sponsor family..I'll call them the Gs for simplicity!) for dinner that evening. We honestly can't say enough wonderful things about them. They put things in our house like mac and cheese and homemade lasagna. They left presents for the kids and wine for us. They've hosted us and taken us around town all weekend. We had a tandori chicken dinner at their house on Friday night. (Oscar announced it's spicy, but he liked it. He also asked to go back for more another night.)

Our wonderful sleep came back to bite us Saturday night when the kids took a "nap" at midnight, and woke up a few hours later. We all had snacks at 6am and forced ourselves to bed. We forced ourselves awake Sat. morning for a shopping excursion at a local expat grocery store. The kids lasted all of 10 min before they started whining about going home, but perked up when pizza was ordered on our return by our sponsors (seriously, they are so great, and yes we can get pizza here! Pretty good pizza too.) We then headed to a big party at the consul generals residence. It was quite an affair with dancing and performances, but we missed most of it :) Oscar worked the crowd and met a lot of people, but the kids were so overwhelmed and after a few mintues of wandering around with their hands over their ears, I headed over to the pool next door with the G's. It was so relaxing and the kids loved splashing around. Oscar and Livi get along so well with the G's 2 kids (who are also 2 and 5) and we are so grateful for this house and their living above us! The yard is spacious and green, and the kids did some night swingingon the swing set in our backyard yesterday.

A few other quick notes:
-Mosquitos are everywhere and we don't leave the house without spray. We've been using california baby and badger balm and they've worked really well.
- It's only going to get cooler from here on out :) may is peak! Its hot and humid but with rainy season coming soon, the cloud cover has been awesome.
- Oscar wore shorts to the grocery store yesterday and was mortified when he noticed no other men had them on. It turns out its totally ok, especially at the kind of store we were at but i dont think he'll do it again soon :)
