Shuffling around in Buffalo

It's been quite a while since my last blog, but at the end of July we headed out of town to visit the family in Buffalo. Our originally scheduled 2 wk trip, changed to a 4 week trip after we found out big Oscar was going to be doing some travelling of his own. The first week we got to see Daria and Gordy - plus Chole and Statler/Waldorf :) - which was wonderful. Espeically since big Oscar made it down to visit for the weekend and we were all together! A very rare occurence and well overdue!! Saying goodbye to Dada was hard, but we've been entertaining ourselves with various Buffalo outings to pass the days. In brief:

1. Sailing!! Oscar has been on the boat a few times but last week was the first time we had a really good sail (mainly because we've been cautious about having the kids on the boat for too long and their level of interest.) Well, the wind was just right and spirits were high. Dadee was at the helm, and Little Oscar had such a blast! He loved the "low side," getting splashed, and of course the "bumps." It was so cool to see him acroos from us just gazing out onto the water with a big smile on his face (eating cheddar bunnies of course as well.) The trip was complete with a blue lollipop (and tongue) the bring us in!
2. The Zoo. While the anaconda used to be high on Oscar's list, the train, carosel, and playground have taken center stage (no surprise there). We still make trips to see the giraffes (we saw them up close feeding one day and that was pretty cool if I do say so myself!), sea lions (always a hit with the underwater viewing tank), polar bears, and gorillas. Liv LOVES seeing all the animals, and gives her best growls for the bears and tigers.
3. The science museum. We discovered the kids room at the sceince museum this visit and it's so perfect for both of them. There's also a dinosaur exhibit going on now, and while Oscar at first really liked the robotic dinosaur you could make move by pushing buttons, he ended up preferring the hands on activities in the kids room. Liv however LOVED the dinosaurs. Her favorites were the huge T. Rex and the triceratops mama and her 2 babies. I was prepared for her to be scared by them, but should've known better! She made Grandad carry her around the room like 5 times visiting all of the dinosaurs... and growling along with them!
What else...visiting Sam and Abby and their great backyard with a swingset and countless toys for Oscar and Sam to play with. Oscar LOVES Sam (he's 7)and they're so cute to see playing together. Sam shows him how to do a bunch of stuff and Oscar is so proud when he can do it! They also have a big playground and pool near their house and we went there the other day and Liv literally had me scrambling around trying to keep up with her. She made it halfway up a 10 foot slide (the slide part!) before I caught up with her at one point. We've hit the corner playground countless times, and Oscar is a pro at riding his tricycle around the neighborhood. Next step scooter!! (We got him a "big boy" one at a garage sale here and I'm hoping he takes to it this fall!) Both kids are crazy about bugs. (The one picture is them looking at a ladybug on a slide. Oscar has the best expression on his face but unf it's a bit too small to see here). Oscar has started a cicada exoskeleton collection in a flowerbox on the back porch and Liv needs to hold every ladybug we come across. Nanee is definitely the helper on this one (although even I don't have a problem touching ladybugs. :) Funny side note: When Dar and I were little, mom got us a "little monsters" book with pictures of insects all blown up so you could see all of their faces and mandibles and such. Well, we recently confessed to mom that while she thought we loved it, Daria hid it under the bed and we'd scare each other with the pictures! I can actually still picture the blown up grasshopper face now...)

Here are a few pics from the past few weeks (there are some really good ones but unf I didn't download them yet). Oh, and the list is out! There are so few posts for the number of people actually applying so we may very well be in DC next year, but Oscar also just has this way about him...To be continued...Well, not too soon..we won't know until the end of the year probably where our next stop is! We can't wait to be reunited with Dada soon!!
